Yesterday, I baked Nutmeg Logs for the Christmas Open House. I’m a little behind on baking, but still have four weeks, right??
I like to cut the cookies with the crimped pastry cutter. It gives the cookies a decorative edge.

I make these rather thin because that creates a crisp cookie. The cookie platter needs a variety…crisp/chewy…thick/thin…dark/light…with fruit and nuts or plain…cookies/candy…what to choose, what to choose!?

I prepared all the cookies for baking and left them stacked while I ran out to pick DD up from visiting a friend. No problem as there is no chemical leavening in this recipe. The cookies can be placed close together on the baking sheet for the same reason. They will not spread. The top sheet has the “leftover” cookies…those bits and pieces from the last cutting that I don’t want to recut. These are the cookies that everyone can sample while the rest are frozen for the open house.

The finished cookies get a drizzle of powdered sugar glaze and a dusting of freshly grated nutmeg.

These will be stacked between sheets of waxed paper in an airtight container and frozen until the open house.

The recipe is here. Easy and delicious. If nutmeg isn’t a favorite spice, cinnamon could be substituted.

We are home after a great visit with our son and his family. Seeing the grands was wonderful. Just a few pics from our visit…
Twin2 called DH “Pa” all week. She would say “where Pa?? where Pa??” every time he left the room.

Twin1 handed out kisses right and left.

They enjoyed getting reacquainted with their aunty.

And we enjoyed getting reacquainted with them, too.

Their sister and DD are the same age and spent the visit having lots of fun, though neither of them were happy about having their pictures taken. Our granddaughter let me take this one when I begged. 🙂

We went to an autumn festival at a local farm. The sandbox was a big hit.

As was the sunflower field.

An afternoon at the park was fun.

Horsey rides with Sissy were fun, too.

And piggyback rides with Pa…

We hated to leave, but it’s always nice to return home, too. We’re hoping our son and his family will be able to come for a visit at Christmas time. DH has been carrying boxes and trees down from the attic today. We’re getting started on Christmas decorating!

Just a couple of pictures from the yard. This one shows the beautiful colors of a small oak tree.

And this one shows a little autumn haze in the air and the long shadows at the end of the day.

A peaceful time in the garden. The weather has been, for the most part, beautiful. And the garden still holds plenty of delight.

The garden is dwindling, but fall is putting out some beautiful color and even some blossoms here and there. Here are two bouquets recently made for church that show the variety still available this time of year.
This basket bouquet is made with hydrangeas and sweet autumn clematis.

And this burst of fall color is made with Southern oak leaves, sumac, goldenrod, wild asters, and sedum.

I’m hoping the garden will provide bouquets through the end of October. Then we’ll put away the baskets and the crocks and the floral foam until spring. 🙂 ~~Rhonda
