The past week, the daylilies have been opening one after another. Every day, DH and I tour the garden to see what has opened. We are in the early to mid season now. We have more than 365 different cultivars, so there will be a lot more to bloom as June and July roll by.

Here’s ‘Novelty Number.’ It looks like it has been brushed with paint. We bought this plant last year and it has multiplied well and has lots of blooms on it.

‘Kindly Light’ is a spider form. To be a “spider,” the length of the longest petal has to be at least four times the width.

‘Monterrey Jack’ is one of my favorites. I love the clear yellow, the large flower, and the pretty eye zone.

‘Window Dressing’ is one of the “white” daylilies. Most whites are tinged with another color or have a contrasting throat, often green or yellow.

‘Strawberry Candy’ was one of our earlier purchases and is still a favorite.

‘Angel Artistry’ gets a lot of comments from garden visitors.

‘Siloam Double Classic’ is a beautiful double daylily. Love the soft pastel coloring.

Sometimes a plant will have a polymerous (also called polytepal) bloom. One having four petals and four sepals (or more) rather than the normal three each. Here is ‘Moonlit Masquerade’ with a polymerous bloom.

Here is a picture of the same plant with the usual blooms.

Another personal favorite is ‘Little Rainbow.’ This one should be seen close up and in person to truly appreciate its subtle beauty. If you click on the picture, it will take you to the picture on flickr.com and you can click ALL SIZES to enjoy a larger photo. It is a polychrome, which means the colors blend and mingle without distinct bands. This daylily has a yellow base with a pink overlay.

I have more to share, but that’s probably enough for this post. You can enjoy other gardens, with other flowers, at Jean’s Bloomin’ Tuesday.

I’ll be posting more daylily pictures as the days go by. We often have plant sales (all proceeds support the mission projects of our church). If you are local and would like some daylilies or other garden plants, we would be glad to have you stop by. If the clump is old enough and big enough, we are always happy to dig double fans of the daylilies. Locals only, please. We haven’t done any shipping and aren’t equipped to do that.

There are surprise lilies all over the yard.

The grass ‘Morning Light’ is one of my favorites. It always looks great.

And the zebra grass is another favorite.

The crepe myrtles are beginning to bloom.

This miniature crepe myrtle gets only about 12-15″ tall. I don’t remember the name. The blossoms are just beginning to open. Soon it will be covered.

Here’s a good place for viewing the front yard.

Yup, still pretty.

We’re enjoying this unusually cool weather. July tends to be hot and humid. Today, I think we had a high of 79* and the sun peeked out just once at the end of the day.

Most of the day, though, was cloudy in the garden.

After all the rain we’ve had, the weeds are tall but very easy to pull. We get tons of redbud volunteers and the rain made pulling them easy, too, as DH shows.

Even though the daylily season is waning, there is still a lot of color in the garden. The purple cone flowers certainly help with that.

The daylily ‘Flasher’ is at its peak right now. You can see this one all the way across the yard! Great color!

Need a place to rest or somewhere to enjoy the view? There’s a bench waiting for you under the dogwood tree.

Aren’t these colors yummy?

Sometimes, daylilies will have four petals and four sepals rather than the usual three each. Blossoms like this are called polytepal. ‘Cosmic Pinwheel’ had two polytepal blossoms. A third blossom had one extra sepal.

In the fenced garden, another bench waits for you. This bench is usually a sunny place to sit, but not today.

The daylily ‘Frans Hals’ is at its peak right now, too. How pretty is that?

The phlox makes a great splash of purple in the background. If you have the space, plant in drifts of color. So pretty!

At the back of the garden, a bed of daylilies separates two entrances into the woods. Which way do you want to go?

Coming out of the woods, you can rest under the mulberry tree…just push that elderberry out of the way. It’s beginning to overshadow the bench. Time to get out the pruners.

In the back yard, near the daylily propagation bed, the pure white of the Southern Magnolia blossom looks so beautiful against the dark glossy green leaves. And the scent as you walk by? Wonderful!

The redbud tree by the wood chip pile was a volunteer. It sits at the end of the parking area and, at one time, was backed over by the car. But it bounced back. I decided to leave it there as a guide to keep the wood chips from being dumped too close to the fenced garden

Coming back from the garden, I’m confronted by the kitties. “Where’s supper??” they want to know. Left to right: Happy, Zak and Zilli. Oreo is nearby. He’s waiting, too.

And lots of puddles.

The fragrance from the garden phlox is heavenly.

The ribbon grass adds great texture to the garden. This is so pretty in the fading evening light.

Everything in the garden glistens with rain drops.

The color of the purple cone flowers ties the garden beds together as the daylily color begins to decline. Purple cone flowers reseed themselves with great abandon and have spread across the garden. Not a bad thing, if you have room for them. Otherwise, just pull them out and pass them on to someone else. They are native to the prairie and are great plants that require little care and no watering.

We are asked about this a lot, so I’ll tell you (in case you’ve wondered) that we do not water our garden. We do water plants when first planted, but other than that, they have to fend for themselves. If they can’t survive without watering, they won’t be in our garden. Of course, that’s not an issue this year with all the rain we’ve had! We do put down a lot of mulch and that helps tremendously. The soil condition improves with the mulching and that helps hold moisture. We use wood chips as mulch. A friend has a tree trimming business and he keeps us well supplied. Thanks, Paul!!

I can hear the barn swallows chattering like crazy on the front porch. Sounds like the babies are fledging!

I’ve worked on this post off and on all day. Now it’s after 6:00 and DH is on his way home from work. We’ll have a quick supper, then check on the barn swallows and take another walk around the yard.

I did get some pictures this evening, just as the sun was going down. Thanks to my nice camera and the great lens DH gave me for my birthday.

We don’t know the real name of this daylily, so call it “Paprika” as it is the color of dark rich paprika.

I don’t know the name of this lovely lily. To tell you the truth, I don’t even remember the plant! It’s one of those “did I plant this here??” plants.

The little daylily ‘Eenie Allegro’ is blooming happily, even though it’s in too much shade. We need to move these this year.

The garden is in full flower and so beautiful right now. We enjoy every minute we can be in it. Tomorrow we are having a plant sale and the weather is supposed to be great…high of 84*. Wonderful after the triple digits of the past few weeks.
