naptime for buttercup

You can find Buttercup under the bubble light tree every afternoon, where she enjoys a long nap before DD gets home from school. She doesn’t bother the ornaments…just makes a little nest and snuggles in.

And if DD is late, Buttercup prowls the front hall, crying until she gets home.

Buttercup loves to sit on the stool in the kitchen. This morning she found it in a spot of sun and took a little snooze.

pippin’s gone

Last night, Pippin passed away. He was an old cat. An outdoor cat. A stray that adopted us in September of 2006. He became DD#1’s cat. When he came to us he looked terrible. His hair was falling out, he was very thin and weak, he had a bad limp. As time went by, his health improved a great deal. During cold weather, his limp would return, but overall he was doing well. He could always be found on the back porch. Usually on the railing, looking through the back door, hoping someone would come out. The past few weeks he didn’t seem to be himself. He lost weight, was lethargic, his hair was coming off in tufts. I told DD I thought he was dying. She wanted to put him in the basement a few nights ago because he looked worse and it was chilly out. She made a bed for him and went down to visit him. Last night she and DH went down and she said goodbye. She petted him and he purred. DH said Pippin didn’t seem to be in any pain. They buried him this morning, down by the willow tree.

It takes no more than a bit of ribbon to put the kitties in a playful mood.

Zilli wanted a turn with the ribbon…

…but it doesn’t take much to set Zak and Zilli off when they are playing together. Before long they were flying around the room…

Happy peeked in to see what was going on, but refused to participate. She’s not a party animal.

The birthday balloon was particularly intriguing to Niko.

Even when it was tied to the upper cabinets, he considered going for it. We had to put it away before he gave up.

After play time, some lap time. Niko won’t jump into just anyone’s lap, either. You have to be special.

Niko prefers running water to the water dish. We bought a kitty fountain for him and all the cats love it. He hasn’t asked for water from the sink for a long time. I guess he thought it was a nice change of pace.

Buttercup’s favorite winter napping spot is on the heating vent in the kitchen. She was totally asleep when I took the picture.

A quick kitty post, then I’m off to bed…

Niko enjoys a head scratch. Some days he seeks more attention than others. He likes to be around us all the time, watching what we’re doing, but he isn’t real cuddly most of the time. Note the cat fountain in the background (never thought I’d own one of those!), but he has been happier since we got it. He no longer cries for drinks from the sink.

Happy never sat on this little ledge when the table was in the dining room. Now the table sits in the front hall.

Niko is under the dining room chair, while Buttercup sits in the window, watching him. Buttercup follows him around the house and keeps an eye on him. They haven’t become friendly yet, but they do tolerate one another pretty well.

The kitchen room was once an enclosed porch. This window, which looks from the dining room into the kitchen was once a window to the outside, prior to the porch. It makes a great pass through for food…and cats…

The second day of the house tour went very well. I’ll post about that soon!

Last year, my sister Paula gave me two large deer, as well as two tall slim artificial trees. The trees will be used on the front porch. The deer have found a home in front of the fireplace. Niko and Buttercup were both very interested and immediately checked them out.

Genny and I decided the deer needed something and she brought in some magnolia leaves. Perfect. We will use those for the open house and for the house tour, as well.

Last evening I put lights on the middle tier of the 9′ living room tree and today I spent three hours finishing the lights on the bottom tier. Looks great! And it should. I used twelve boxes of commercial grade, 200 count light strings. This tree sits on a revolving stand and makes a beautiful display. The cats came to watch. I guess they got bored. Taking naps was more their speed. Buttercup settled down near the fireplace and Happy took up residence under my chair.

Happy took a long nap next to the warm glow of this light string.

My sister Genny is coming this evening to spend the weekend helping with the Christmas decorating. DH couldn’t find fresh cranberries in town last night, so Genny is bringing eight bags. It takes six to make enough popcorn and cranberry strings for the living room tree.

I’m moving on to the office tree. It needs one light string replaced and then we can finish decorating it. More later. ~~Rhonda
