DD has a birthday today. Over the weekend, we took her and a friend out to dinner. She loves sushi, so we enjoyed that. Delicious!

A busy week ahead. We’re still taking down Christmas. It doesn’t take as long to take down as it does to put up, but I haven’t been in the mood to do it. I’m grateful that our son and his wife came over Friday to help, and they cleared most of three rooms. That’s a lot, in case you haven’t been here at Christmas… The lights were a big hit with our granddaughter. She had fun just holding them. She thought they were “bootiful.” Later the twins pretended they were a campfire, though there was some disagreement about just where the campfire should be placed. Didn’t take too long to straighten that out. Then they got pillows and blankets and “slept” by the campfire for a while. Fun.

Tonight is DD’s family birthday party. And DH’s sister and her husband will be here for a few days. So I’m planning to keep things as easy as I can menu-wise.

We were highly entertained Sunday afternoon watching the twins wrap “presents.” They spent over an hour cutting gift wrap, pulling tape, wrestling with the packaging…so much fun! Pa got a bow, Ma got a box of cereal, Auntie got a box of tea and Sissy got a bowl of chalk.

Serious business!

They (and we!) had a great time!

We’re taking a day off school to catch up on some housekeeping needs in the scrapbook room and in DD’s room. Call it “home ec.” We’ll make the school work up later this week. In keeping with the home ec theme, here’s our menu for the week.

Happy birthday to my sisters, Mary and Margaret! I hope you both have a lot of fun celebrating your birthday today!

Our son’s family came over for dinner yesterday. Afterward, the twins helped Pa make cookies. There was a little taste-testing going on, too…

It’s 45* today, but windy. A good day to stay inside and plan the week. Here’s our menu.

The three grands stayed over night Saturday. The twins spent a lot of time cutting with Ma’s scrapbooking scissors. They had a ball! It was interesting to watch their totally different approaches to cutting.

Always fun to have the grands. Following is the menu for the week. I’m trying a couple of new recipes. I’ve already made the Chicken Taco Chili for tonight, though I made it on the stove instead of in the crock pot. It’s very good. I left out the chilies, the taco seasoning, and the chili powder. And used fresh parsley instead of cilantro, because I do NOT like the taste of cilantro. The soup is very warming and delicious. It would be great with corn bread or with tortilla chips. Celery sticks would be good with it, too.

Spicy Shredded Pork in the Crock Pot ~ I follow the pork recipe’s ingredient list, but I don’t blend them. I put the roast in the crock pot and throw everything in on top. I know it’s not the same as roasting it, so it’s different than the meat the original recipe would produce, but it’s still delicious! And easier.

My side of the family came over for our family Christmas party yesterday. The party had been scheduled for December, but my mother was hospitalized the day before we were to have the party, so we canceled. She passed away a few days later. We missed her at the party, but were glad for the chance to get together again. We did miss one sibling whose husband is having surgery this week, so the circle was minus her family. We are planning a sisters’ weekend for this spring. Hopefully, we’ll all make it for that!

My sister and her husband handed out the gifts.

My brother and his wife enjoyed looking at scrapbooks of clippings, cartoons, etc., that my mother had collected.

After dinner, we went through a few boxes of Mom’s things, including many hats. Twin1 loves hats and blue is her favorite color. She’ll enjoy wearing her Great-Ma’s hat.

We enjoyed keeping the twins overnight Saturday and are looking forward to having all three grands here for an overnight Tuesday. Last week, the girls were here and the twins had a ball playing games on their aunt’s phone. Everything is an adventure for them. And lots of fun for us.

Here’s the menu for this week. My family is coming Sunday for our family Christmas party that had been postponed due to Mom’s funeral just before Christmas. It will be good to see everyone.

Christmas menu

We kept the menu easy for Christmas Day. As it turned out, we had this around 5:00, after an afternoon of opening gifts.

Three Cheese Spread with Pita Chips and Crackers

Bisquick Sausage Balls

Simple Marinated Shrimp This was delicious.

Veggie Tray with Parsley Dip
We didn’t care for the parsley dip. We had some leftover dill dip and preferred using that. The parsley dip was a bit flat with too much garlic.

Crackers with Smoked Salmon Spread

Peanut Butter Balls

Holiday Petits Fours

Ginger Cake Trifle (made this in a glass bowl, rather than individual glasses)

We’ve been munching on the leftovers ever since.

It was nice to have a casual meal, rather than a big production for Christmas Day. Especially nice after the long week we had with Mom’s funeral.

This will be a busy week for our household. We are hosting three events. Thursday evening, Nathan George will be presenting a concert here with his friends Mark Stoffel and Ross Sermons. On Friday, ladies from my sister’s church are coming for a house tour. We’ll serve a dessert and do a Christmas craft of some kind. Saturday, my side of the family are coming for our annual family Christmas party. So looking forward to these events!

Our annual Christmas open house was a great success. So much fun! We have several more events to host, all to celebrate the Christ of Christmas. Genny drew this on our chalkboard. We’re knee-deep in Christmas boxes and decorations. Most of the trees are up…three to go, I think. I have a lot of pictures to share, but will start with this one of the grands and get the menu up before it’s too late to post it. The twins wanted toast for breakfast, so we dolled it up with sugar sprinkles, in their favorite colors. Quite the hit with the girls.
