We were gone for five days and when we got back, it seemed the garden had suddenly become lush and full. Perhaps that’s just my perspective, but I think, too, the rain we had gave everything a big push.

The fenced garden is already looking overgrown. And I had hoped to plant some herbs in there this year…

The columbine is in full bloom. From the old red and yellow columbine, through the singles in many colors, to the doubles…

We have a large bed of columbine at the front of the house. So pretty right now!

The clematis ‘Nelly Moser’ is climbing through the hydrangea bush by the front porch.

The Korean lilac is blooming. We lost one of these last summer, and are not sure why it died. Part of this bush has died, too. Waiting to see if it will survive the season.

Near one of the beds in the front yard, the Johnny Jump Ups have appeared en masse.

At the west gate to the fenced garden, Salvia ‘May Night’ is just beginning to shine.

Blue False Indigo is native to the Midwest, so it thrives during our hot and humid summers. Plant it where you are sure you want it because it has a long tap root and extensive root system and is, therefore, difficult to move.

Extending springtime just a bit longer, some of our Poet’s daffodils have just bloomed. Most of them were done a week or so ago. Perhaps they are planted deeper than their friends were?

The irises are beginning to bloom. ‘Congratulations’ opened yesterday.

I’ll save all the lovely hosta plants for another post. They are coming on strong this year and are looking great!

The air was damp and chilly today. Hard to believe that in July we would have the air conditioning turned off for days in a row. And who would believe we would need to close the windows against the chilly air. But we did! The garden has enjoyed all the rain we’ve had for the past few months.

The black eyed Susans are a sea of color.

The tiger lilies are near the end of their bloom. A few last blossoms top the long lanky stems.

A helpful flickrite helped me ID this little green bug. I saw several of them on the tiger lilies. They are immature stink bugs. Never would have guessed that!

After counting the new daylilies, we found we bought 14 new ones last weekend. Four or five of those were mini daylilies. Mini doesn’t necessarily mean a small plant. It refers to the size of the blossom. Miniature daylilies have blooms that are under three inches in diameter.

DH planted the mini daylilies in the fenced garden.

Zak watched from the comfort of the birdbath.

Near the edge of the woods, the garden phlox backs the last of the ditch lilies.

I think I’ll get a blanket and watch one of my favorite shows…”Chopped.” I’ll see you in the garden tomorrow. To visit other gardens (where it may be warmer!) click on over to Jean’s place for Bloomin’ Tuesday!

I need to do something about those upstairs windows. Ever since we cut the two trees down in front of the house, the shades have bothered me. I guess they weren’t noticeable while the pines were covering the view.

‘Lady Emily’

I wish the sun had been shining when I took this picture. The catalpa tree is in full bloom and, in the sunlight, it gleams.

Hollyhocks have popped up here and there. They have a way of wandering around the yard. This one showed up in the front birdbath bed this year.

The ‘Paprika’ achillea needs to be divided. A candidate for the plant sale we’ll have in a few weeks, for sure.

With all the rain we had, yard work will be a bit slow for a few days. We’ll probably work on potting things for the plant sale. The damp ground IS good for digging.

I went out to take pictures and got rained out. We had a short downpour and after things cleared up, I went back out. So here are some pics from the garden today.

The hosta ‘Samuria’ will be blooming soon.

Rhododendron

The astilbe is blooming next to the garage, along with the pretty ‘Neon Flash’ spirea.

‘Bitsy’ is blooming on the east side of the house.

In the fenced garden, the hollyhocks are just opening.

‘Zebrina’

These beautiful lilies are on the north side of the fenced garden.

I don’t know what this shrub / small tree is, but it grows in the fence row behind the wood chip pile.

The catalpa is also blooming along the fence row.

I love the tight little buds on this elderberry bush, growing along the edge of the woods at the back of the yard.

Just north of the mulberry, we have a few Louisiana and Japanese iris. This Louisiana, called ‘Black Gamecock,’ looks like deep black/purple velvet.

I have a lot of shots from the front yard, too, but I think I’ll save them for tomorrow. Don’t want to wear you out walking the yard.
